Additional 2000L SUBs
Installing new 2K liter SUBs to meet the demand of the growing 2K portfolio in the J&J network.

2000L SUBs 3 & 4
To generate more capacity, 2000L SUBs are being installed. These are FED batch cell culture techniques. With the use of this technique, product in upstream is scaled up from Preculture to Fermentation to a volume of 2000L. The output is then 2000L which is transported through some filters and a centrifuge to Primary Recovery. The difference with Continuous Perfusion cell culture (which takes 60 days) is that it takes only a few weeks and has an immediate output with a high concentration instead of a continuous output of a low concentration. There is a significant growth expected in the Fed Batch 2K production portfolio. Many of our innovative Large Molecule medicines are produced in 2000L SUBs (Single Use Bioreactors). We anticipate the demand for these products to grow, as we see happening in the demand for CD3 production already.
What & Where?
To expand capacity for Cell Culture Suite 2, 2000L SUBs were installed for products like CD3 Low Titer and CD3 High Titer.
When?
These 2000L SUBs were successfully installed in APR23. SUBs 5&6 will be installed after the completion of Cell Culture Suite 3.
Do you hear colleagues talking about SUBs 4&5 instead of 3&4? That could be right: on the shop floor, we perceive SUBs 3&4 as SUBs 4&5. This also applies to SUBs 5&6, which we actually regard as SUBs 6&7.
2000L SUBs 5 & 6
There is a significant growth expected in the Fed Batch 2K production portfolio. Many of our innovative Large Molecule medicines are produced in 2000L SUBs (Single Use Bioreactors). We anticipate the demand for these products to grow, as we see happening in the demand for CD3 production already. We're embarking on a phased introduction of new 2000L batches. Back in APR23, two new 2000L SUBs were implemented, now it’s time for the following two.
What & Where?
The 2000L SUBs will be located in Suite 2. In the exact location the 2000L subs will be placed, there are currently 500L bioreactors .These will be moved to Suite 3, so the schedule of this project depends on the completion of Cell Culture Suite 3. The engineering and design phase will be followed by a construction phase. This is necessary because the SUBs are so large that they do not fit in the current production suite, which means that we have to increase the ceiling. An additional centrifuge and a 2000L SUM Single Use Mixer will also be added in this project.
When?
The 2000L SUBs 5&6 will be installed after the completion of Cell Culture Suite 3.
